On August 24th, 2014, The Younger You with Troy Thompson will air a full episode featuring the stories of two young patients of Thompson Facial Plastics who underwent ear pinning surgery (otoplasty) by Dr. Thompson in Utah. They will be discussing why they wanted to have this procedure done, what they experienced with the recovery process, and how their lives were different following plastic surgery at Thompson Facial Plastics. In a recent article written by Dr. Thompson, titled "Otoplasty For Outstanding Ears", he explains that children and teens with prominent ears are often teased and ridiculed by their peers.
"Boys grow tired of having to grow long hair to cover their ears while girls affected by the problem are reluctant to even tuck their hair behind their ears or wear a pony tail – in fear of being ridiculed. Many parents don't realize prominent ears can be corrected by means of otoplasty (ear pinning) surgery, which is a simple surgical procedure. The condition ranges from very mild, to the complete absence of an ear (microtia) in severe cases. For the majority of patients with cupped, malformed, or even injured ears, dramatic improvement can be achieved through otoplasty surgery.
As with all elective surgery, to me it's very important for the patient to be part of the decision making process. When the patient is excited about the change to their ears, he or she is motivated and able to smoothly navigate the surgical process. As I see them back in my office following recovery with improved confidence and big smiles on their faces, I'm happy to know that I've contributed to that happiness in some way."
Dr. Thompson's experience with ear surgery goes far beyond his personal practice in Utah. He joins two medical mission groups each year treating many children with the congenital condition mentioned above, microtia, in which a child is born missing one or both ears. Dr. Thompson and his colleagues have been created and attaching new ears for children for ten plus years and enjoys giving his time and talents to the benefit of these children in foreign Ecuador and Guatemala.
One patient featured on the episode gave a note to Dr. Thompson thanking him for his new ears. "Thank you for putting my ear's back. You're the best doctor ever. Thanks for making me feel happy. I'm already having a better life. And the last think, I hope you make other people happy too."
This episode will be featured on The CW30 on 8/24 at 9:30 and again on 8/26 at 4:30 on ABC4Utah.
