ABIM Announces New Members on its Specialty Boards and Exam Committees
Philadelphia, PA, July 1, 2014 – The
American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) today announced new appointments for its Specialty Board and Exam Committees. The new governance model calls for the Specialty Boards – previously tasked almost exclusively with creating the exam in their discipline – to broaden their role and take on the work of defining and assessing the full scope of competencies in their discipline across the spectrum of our Certification and Maintenance of Certification (MOC) programs. For the first time, each of the Specialty Boards includes two public members, one a member of the inter-professional health care team, the other someone bringing the patient/caregiver perspectives.
"Our new structure will leverage the unique skills of a diverse set of physician leaders and public members and allow the American Board of Internal Medicine to continuously evolve our Certification and Maintenance of Certification program in ways that make it more relevant to our diplomates and meaningful to patients at the same time," said Dr. Richard J. Baron, President and CEO of ABIM.
In the new structure, each discipline – including internal medicine – will have a Specialty Board and a separate Exam Committee.
Each Specialty Board's unique ideas about which assessments are valuable in their discipline will enable them to define, refine and set standards for their specific Certification and MOC program. They will also perform oversight/review of performance assessments in the discipline and continue to build partnerships with societies and other organizational stakeholders in support of ABIM work.
Each Exam Committee will continue to work closely with their respective Specialty Board as they develop and set performance standards for Certification and Maintenance of Certification exams.
"Each member of the Specialty Boards and Exam Committees will bring their unique practice, experience and expertise to the development of Certification and MOC programs that reflect the unique needs of each discipline while maintaining the standards established by ABIM," said Dr. Lee R. Berkowitz, Chair of the ABIM Council.
