The announcement, made today, comes two weeks after the compliance deadline set forth by the HIPAA Omnibus Rule, an update to the original HIPAA legislation, which increases both the requirements for ensuring the confidentiality, availability and integrity of electronic protected health information (e-PHI) as well as the legal and financial penalties and liability for non-compliance.
