The Pennsylvania-based rehabilitation provider, Pyramid Healthcare, published a video on their website that identifies the top 10 warning signs that a family member, friend, or coworker, is abusing drugs and/or alcohol or has developed an addiction. Addiction can be difficult to detect in others because substance users often attempt to hide their behavior or downplay the effects of the drugs. The video highlights physical, behavioral, and psychological/attitude-related signs that a person struggling with drug and/or alcohol use or addiction often demonstrates. It also offers information about drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs, primarily outpatient and inpatient substance abuse treatment, based on the severity of the addiction and environmental factors present.
Addiction can occur as a result of genetic factors, environmental pressure, habits that escalate, and chemical changes in the body. When habit becomes a compulsive behavior, a person with an addiction may not realize the harm they are doing to themselves or the people around them because drug use has been normalized to him/her. After someone has identified a drug problem in a person they care about, he/she can discuss the effects that the drug abuse is having and introduce the idea of seeking out drug and alcohol rehabilitation.
Here are a few signs covered in the video that someone you may know is developing a problem with drug use:
