December 08, 2005 (PRLEAP.COM) Lifestyle News
Dandridge, TN - As life gets busier and busier, people are looking back to the more simple days of years past. In The Twelve Days of Christmas, The Old Schoolhouse shares Christmas traditions, old and new, that help make the most of family time and keep Christ at the center of the celebration. Stories from twelve different families located across the U.S. tell of the simple joys of reading Christmas stories together, enjoying the blessing of celebrating with many generations, the craziness of traveling during the holidays and special family traditions that make the holidays special for each family.

In Teaching the Lost Arts, Rebekah Wilson encourages parents to teach their children lost arts such as sewing, woodworking, cooking, gardening, knitting and whittling. By taking the time to teach children some of these lost arts, families not only create wonderful memories together, but also teach children patience and perseverance. Children are rewarded by seeing things they've created with their own hands. They learn to take joy in working with their hands, develop a good work ethic and learn to appreciate handmade items more. These skills may even provide the child with skills to earn income with as they get older. Mrs. Wilson states, “Today's children have often been neglected in this area and have not been given this hidden gift. They have idle hands and little enjoyment of the accomplishment of others.”

Kate Estes of Hands & Hearts History Kits shares her family's love of living history events in Homegrown Clothes from Garden to Garment. She describes how eighteenth century families typically planted flax to create linen for their clothing. “I am speechless when I consider the labor involved in creating even the simplest clothing. That women also took the time to make the clothes beautiful is amazing. After months of labor, a mother's family was truly clothed in love.” Mrs. Estes even set up a website to provide extension activities for her article, which is located at http://handsandhearts.homestead.com
