Swindled out of £32,000 and with stock worth £50,000 stolen in a night time raid would be enough to put most people off running a small ECommerce business - but not John Sollars of Stinky Ink. One of life's optimists John Sollars has weathered the storms and has consistently built up his online business selling ink cartridges and PC peripherals from his premises based in Alveley Shropshire.
Having overcome seemingly impossible obstacles along the way the business is now achieving a turnover in excess of £800,000 has a projected target of £1.2 million for next year.
An extended case study has recently been produced on Stinky Ink by the software company Actinic – the technological powerhouse behind thousands of UK ECommerce stores including the Stinky Ink website.
In early 2002, John decided on a life-changing move when he was in his late forties. Giving up a well-paid salary as a sales director of an independent electronic components company, John sold the family caravan and put all his savings and energy into his own online business – http://www.stinkyinkshop.co.uk. The online business sells every known make and model of printer cartridge – both recycled and originals.
For a new business thinking of setting up online John had this to say:
"Contrary to the Internet myth I'm actually a believer in the get rich slowly philosophy. My experience is that success doesn't happen overnight on the Internet. Persistence and hard work is the way that this business has built up"
And he added:
"Don’t believe all the rubbish about being able to make millions without doing any work – it doesn’t happen in any other business and it certainly doesn’t happen within ECommerce. Success demands100% commitment and dedication".
