Autism Website Launched to Support Parents, Families and Loved Ones

December 6, 2005 — As autism rates skyrocket across the country and globe, more and more families are forced to deal with the emotional and psychological challenges that come with the diagnosis of a child or loved one. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is the fastest growing developmental disability in the country and can have far-reaching effects. For this reason, www.autismkey.com has been launched to assist parents, loved ones and families in need.

"There’s certainly no shortage of clinical or medical resources," said Gary Greaves, webmaster and moderator of Autism Key. "However, what’s often lacking is the experiential information that comes from parents and caregivers about the right schools, forms of treatment and physicians. We want to establish a web community where people can come together and share first hand experiences. Our user friendly forums will be the driving force for disseminating information.”

Visitors will have the option to post anonymously or as registered users, discussing topics such as treatment centers, physicians, school systems and protocols. Greaves, who has an autistic child of his own, said the site was born out of the frustrations he and his wife experienced themselves. He added, “After learning of our son’s disorder, we read everything we could get our hands on. However, we were missing the guidance and encouragement from people who understood our challenges. Support from family members and friends only goes so far. Sometimes, it’s necessary to receive help from someone who’s been in your shoes.”

In addition to the message boards, Autism Key will provide the latest news stories and information relating to autism spectrum disorders. The site’s primary focus will be to inform, equip and educate those seeking answers they cannot otherwise find. It’s goal is to compliment, not replace the help and assistance people are already receiving.
