Toyota Tops Cars.com's Top 10 American-Made Index
July 21, 2013 (PRLEAP.COM) Business News
WATERTOWN, Mass., July 21, 2013 - While the trend for manufacturers has been to outsource and off-shore their production, Toyota continues to increase its American manufacturing capability. For the second consecutive year, Toyota has the most brands featured on Cars.com's American-Made Index (AMI), a prestigious ranking of the top American-made cars. Ranked on several factors, including the manufacturing location of their parts, their point of assembly, and their sales figures, four Toyota brands have made it onto Cars.com's acclaimed Top-10 list: the Toyota Camry, the Toyota Sienna, the Toyota Tundra, and the Toyota Avalon. Toyota and General Motors are the only automakers with more than one car featured in this year's AMI.
"Many people don't realize that more often than not, their Toyota car or truck is made right here in America," says Adam Skolnick, General Manager of Watertown Toyota, a Boston-based Toyota Dealer. "Toyota has made a significant investment in American manufacturing, and we're proud to be a part of it."
Among its esteemed fleet of American-made vehicles, Toyota's top ranked car in this year's AMI is the Camry, rated number two overall. The Camry, manufactured in Kentucky and Indiana, has been a stalwart of Cars.com's AMI for years, having held the top spot from 2009-2012. The 2013 model, which features a standard four-cylinder engine, six-speed automatic transmission, and a number of safety upgrades, including blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, has been widely praised for its high reliability, passing power, spacious seating, and impressive fuel efficiency (25/35 mpg city/highway).
The Toyota Sienna, Tundra, and Avalon are ranked number five, seven, and ten on this year's list, respectively. While the Indiana-made Sienna and the Texas-built Tundra have been regulars on Cars.com's American-Made Index since the study's inception in 2006, this year represents the Kentucky-manufactured Avalon's AMI debut. Featuring a massively redesigned exterior and interior, increased mileage, and stiffened suspension, the 2013 Avalon has received extensive applause for its sportier appearance, luxurious feel, and vastly improved ride and steering.
