Small Buick Encore Proves Big on Safety with Nods from IIHS and NHTSA

WASHINGTON, N.J., June 11, 2013 - Safety is always a high priority for vehicle buyers, but in the rapidly growing and highly competitive compact crossover SUV segment, it can also serve as a critical differentiator for a model in a packed field. The new Buick Encore brings a luxurious option to that crowded class, and it has passed the nation's most stringent crash tests, recently receiving an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick rating and a 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score for its all-wheel-drive models from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).In order to earn Top Safety Pick status, the Encore had to score a top rating of "good" in each of four IIHS tests, including front, side, rear-impact and rollover crash evaluations. Meanwhile, the luxury compact crossover also excelled in the NHTSA tests, which covered front, side and rollover crashes, as well as a new side pole-impact test that was first implemented for the 2011 model year. The Encore's high scores were aided by its advanced body structure, which is composed of more than 60 percent high-strength steel to create a protective space around passengers.
"Buick owners are drawn to the brand because of its renowned sophistication and comfort, but even the most stylish vehicles need to be safe for people to buy them," said Ed Rossi, owner of Rossi Chevrolet Buick GMC, a New Jersey Buick dealership. "With the Encore's recognition from the IIHS, every vehicle in the Buick lineup has now earned Top Safety Pick status, so drivers can feel secure in whichever model suits their lifestyle."
Introduced for the 2013 model year, the Buick Encore comfortably seats up to five passengers and is available in both front- and all-wheel-drive configurations. Housing a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 138 horsepower, the Encore returns up to 33 mpg on the highway with front-wheel drive. Inside, premium amenities like QuietTuning with Bose Active Noise Cancellation technology, an IntelliLink infotainment system and available leather upholstery combine with thoughtful storage spaces and 48.4 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded for a well-appointed and versatile ride.
The boldly styled Encore is designed to build on the sales momentum created by the Buick Enclave, which has been the automaker's best-seller each year since its debut in 2007. Boosted by a redesign for the 2013 model year, the Enclave posted its best-ever May retail sales last month, moving 4,912 units for a 19 percent increase over same month last year.
"Buick's new designs are striking a chord with younger buyers in particular because they offer excitement and refinement in one package," added Rossi. "The Enclave and Encore luxury crossovers are especially well suited for young families as they realize they need more space but don't want to give up on the personal style and creature comforts to which they've grown accustomed."
