For most people, the holidays are a time for gathering together with family and friends. People who are away from loved ones may wonder what they can do to make their holidays "merry & bright."Life and career expert Alison Blackman Dunham, aka. "Advice Sister Alison," advises advance planning and activities to look forward to for those who are alone or away from home during the holidays. "Make an activity plan before the holidays and pre-arrange specific times to contact family and friends during those special days, apart," she suggests.
Host a holiday party and exchange gifts before friends leave for their holiday destinations," is another one of Alison's suggestions. And, realize that there are many others in similar situations, everywhere alo seeking companionship and cheer. Local organizations, religious organizations, and even individuals often open up their hearts (and sometimes, their homes) to share some holiday spirit with those who find themselves alone "Peruse the local papers for hosted and singles/solo dinners and get-togethers. These offer conversation and companionship and most everyone is similar circumstances and grateful for additional company" she says.
For those who are at home, but without family or friends, Alison suggests volunteering as a wonderful way to pass the holidays and feel good while doing good for others. She also advises treating yourself to little luxuries that make things easier and more fun, such as stocking up on movies that inspire or make you laugh, stocking the fridge with special foods, and making time to exercise and perhaps, enjoy holiday decorations.
"Those who are single or solo this holiday season can look forward to making things different next year. "This, year, whether it's Christmas, Chanukah, New Years, or any other holiday, keep in mind that each day is just 24 hours, and then it's over!" says Advice Sister Alison.
