Nissan Reveals Its First-Ever Pathfinder Hybrid in the Big Apple

GURNEE, Ill., April 5, 2013 — Seven-passenger crossovers aren't typically known for their impressive fuel economy, but Nissan is working to change that perception with the new 2014 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid, which debuted at the New York International Auto Show in late March. Due to reach Nissan dealerships late this summer, the first-ever gas-electric Pathfinder will net a manufacturer-estimated 26 mpg combined, an increase of 24 percent over the standard model that sacrifices virtually nothing in driving performance. Key to the Pathfinder Hybrid's efficiency is a responsive electric motor paired with an advanced lithium-ion battery pack. Add in a supercharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, and the powertrain produces a combined 250 horsepower and 243 pound-feet of torque. Those numbers are very similar to the output of the V6 engine in the conventional Pathfinder, which produces 10 more horsepower but three less pound-feet of torque.
"Nissan is dedicated to achieving the fuel efficiency that modern drivers demand without forgoing the performance it has provided over the years in vehicles like the Pathfinder," said Joe Lage, general sales manager of Rosen Nissan Gurnee, a Chicago Nissan dealership. "The new Pathfinder Hybrid is an exciting choice for families who want to save at the gas pump while still having the ability to tow, haul and drive through any conditions."
Released last fall, the fourth-generation Pathfinder already boasts much-improved fuel economy compared to previous generations, returning a best-in-class 26 mpg on the highway thanks to its advanced lightweight unibody chassis and aerodynamic exterior. With nearly 80 cubic feet of cargo space with the second- and third-row seats folded, as well as an optional four-wheel-drive system that will also be available on the hybrid model, the new Pathfinder's versatility has helped it quickly gain traction on the showroom floor.
Sales of the Nissan Pathfinder increased by 177 percent year-over-year last month to reach a new March record, while the model's year-to-date sales have now risen 172 percent compared to the same time period in 2012. The Pathfinder's March performance helped Nissan achieve its best-ever sales month in the United States, with the auto brand selling 126,623 models across its lineup. Nissan also received a boost from its Versa subcompact, which saw record March sales as well, and its all-electric LEAF, which had its highest monthly sales tally since its launch, moving 2,236 units.
"Nissan has really turned up the wick on sales by developing advanced new models that offer eye-catching looks and cost-saving efficiency," added Lage. "Today's drivers want the latest technology and capability on top of class-leading fuel economy, and they're discovering that Nissan covers all the bases."
