"Sadly, we may not see the values come back anytime soon. We have seen many of the owners grow four years older waiting for an eventual retirement. That bodes well for supply of middle market companies, but unfortunately it has forced business owners to reassess their business values with what the market will bear. It has taken a few years, but we're seeing values increase and internal adjustments made by management and investors."
Secondly, some businesses never recovered, but saw major losses since the Great Recession. "We had business owners turn down very large valuations on construction companies in 2005 and 2006, thinking that the market was going to go into infinity and beyond," says Jenkins. "For some in the construction industry, the opposite happened and unfortunately, they never recovered and probably never will."
