But owner James Butler said there are still a few elements about the company that surprises some people, including the fact that the Butler's Electric showroom is home to the most extensive lighting showroom in town.

"And it truly is a family owned business," Butler said. "When you do business with us, the money stays in the community." His father began the company in 1948 in Whiteville. "The joke is that my dad started the electric business out of the trunk of his car," he said. Soon, though, his father realized he was on to something and added a trailer to pull behind his car.

Butler's Electric grew from there…and grew and grew and grew! There are now six stores operated by James and his brothers. The Wilmington store, owned by James Butler, is located at 2013 Castle St. Older brother Ben Butler is in Myrtle Beach and Carlos Butler is in the High Point-Greensboro-Winston-Salem area. Already the third generation is starting to take its place, too. James' son Johnson now works with him at the Wilmington location and his niece, Ashley, runs the store in Fayetteville.

Since 1969, the local store has been in the same site, but has expanded four times. The latest expansion took place three years ago and now the once modest-sized building has the largest lighting showroom and most impressive inventory in the area. "We want to be sure we have the latest and the greatest," says Butler who recently returned from the national lighting show in Dallas, Texas where he purchased more from this market than he ever has in the past.

During his many years in the business, he's seen a profusion of fashions and finishes come in and out of favor. What strikes him most is that there are so many options available now. "I would say we have more fixtures on display here than anyone in the area," he said. "And compared to some of the box stores, we actually know what we're selling."

Butler's Electric has more than 2,000 fixtures on display at 2013 Castle St., a fleet of six trucks ready to make deliveries, a knowledgeable and friendly staff as well as a full service electrical counter with over 100 years of experience to help with any of your electrical needs. The majority of the Butler's Electric Supply clientele comes from referrals from local builders and electricians working on new construction. But they also have a sizable percentage of people working on remodeling projects. Butler's Electric Supply provides the design capability for custom orders of all sizes and difficulty as well. "Sometimes we'll just have someone come in who wants a new look, a new fixture or chandelier, for a dinner party," James said.
