Lighter, Faster, Stronger: 2014 Porsche Cayman Debuts at LA Auto Show

NASHUA, N.H., Dec. 11, 2012 — After redesigning its iconic Porsche 911 sports car for the 2012 model year, Porsche followed up its achievement with its next-generation Boxster for the 2013 model year. Now, it looks like the 2014 model year will belong to the luxury automaker's other sports coupe, the Porsche Cayman, which recently showed off its new hardware for the first time at the LA Auto Show.

Like its sleek sports car brethren, the 2014 Porsche Cayman has been completely revised to simultaneously boost power, speed and fuel efficiency, featuring an all-new lightweight aluminum and steel body. When it goes on sale next spring, buyers will be able to choose between two powerplants: a 275-horsepower 2.7-liter engine that Porsche estimates will return up to 32 mpg on the highway, or a 3.4-liter unit that pumps out 325 horsepower and allows the Cayman S to jet from zero to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds.

"With the redesigns of three sports cars in three model years, the Porsche lineup is fresher than it has ever been, which means more power, faster acceleration and increased efficiency across the board," said Larry Bedell, general manager of Porsche of Nashua, a New Hampshire Porsche dealer. "Like the latest generations of the 911 and Boxster, the 2014 Cayman won't disappoint. It has become even more fun to drive, and at the same time, it'll cost buyers less at the gas pump."

The new Cayman was joined at the LA Auto Show by the 2013 Porsche 911 Carrera 4, which made its North American debut ahead of its on-sale date early next year. Distinguished by its broader rear end and a red light strip connecting the tail lamps, the Carrera 4 is the first four-wheel-drive version of the seventh-generation 911, offering all-conditions handling for those in the Snow Belt.

Regardless of the specific trim, the 2013 Porsche 911 Carrera was recently recognized by ALG, topping the Premium Sports Car category in the automotive researcher's 14th annual Residual Value Awards. After factoring in criteria like industry trends, historical vehicle performance and segment competition, ALG awarded the new vehicles that are most likely to retain the highest percentage of their MSRPs after three years.

Another industry research group, Kelley Blue Book, instead took a five-year glance into the future with its newly released 2013 Best Resale Value Awards, and two additional Porsche models were honored. The 2013 Porsche Panamera emerged as the leader in the High-End Luxury Car category, while the 2013 Porsche Cayenne not only won the award for Luxury Midsize SUV/Crossover, but also finished in the top 10 of all vehicles on the market.
