Audi to Unveil Comprehensive Clean-Diesel Lineup at LA Auto Show

NASHUA, N.H., Nov. 29, 2012 — Currently, Audi buyers in the United States can choose from just two clean-diesel models, the A3 TDI and the Q7 TDI, but that number will be expanding to six following a handful of debuts at the LA Auto Show this week. Slated to also include the Audi A6, A7, A8 and Q5, the luxury automaker's expanded diesel lineup will arrive at U.S. dealers next year, starting with the 2014 Audi A8 TDI becoming available in the spring.

Diesel drivetrains have steadily grown in popularity in recent years, as American drivers have come around to their high fuel efficiency and responsive torque. Audi's TDI clean-diesel vehicles return up to 30 percent better fuel economy than their gas counterparts, thanks to diesel's higher density and energy content. In fact, the automaker estimates that U.S. TDI models of the Audi A3 and Q7 have saved the equivalent of more than 4 million gallons of gasoline, or 240,000 barrels of foreign oil, since their introduction in 2009.

"TDI clean-diesel engines are really a win-win for Audi buyers, because they save at the pump but still provide an incredibly engaging ride," said Larry Bedell, general manager of Audi of Nashua, an Audi dealer in New Hampshire. "The fact that Audi is willing to commit to an entire lineup in the United States means that diesel drivetrains and all their environmental benefits will be on the road for a long time to come."

All of Audi's new diesel models will house a 3.0-liter V6 TDI engine, which produces 240 horsepower and an impressive 406 pound-feet of torque. That powerplant will help the flagship 2014 Audi A8 TDI go from zero to 60 mph in just 6.4 seconds yet still return 24 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway, according to manufacturer estimates. In comparison, 2013 A8 models with a gas-powered 3.0-liter V6 unit achieve an EPA fuel-economy rating of 18 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway.

In September, an updated 2013 Audi Q7 TDI went on sale with the same revised 3.0-liter V6 engine scheduled for the brand's upcoming diesel offerings. The change not only boosted output by 15 horsepower compared to the 2012 Q7 TDI, but improved fuel economy by two miles per gallon in the city and three miles per gallon on the highway, bringing EPA ratings to 19 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway.

Buyers of the 2013 Q7 can now also opt for the Audi connect system, which integrates with Audi MMI Navigation plus to offer Google maps and search functionality, as well as a Wi-Fi hotspot for up to eight mobile devices. In addition to its optional TDI engine, the seven-passenger SUV is available with two gas-powered 3.0-liter V6 units, with one outputting 280 horsepower and the other reaching 333 horsepower.

"Regardless of your preferred engine, the Audi Q7 is a winter warrior on the outside and a luxurious refuge from the cold inside," Bedell noted. "Whether you're bringing your child and five of their friends to hockey practice or heading north with the family for a ski trip, the Q7 comfortably fits any combination of cargo that you have in mind."
