NYC Plastic Surgeon Discusses Flower Men

MANHATTAN, NEW YORK-Straight men are getting prettier, according to a recent report on "flower men" by Good Morning America. Is pretty really the new handsome?Straight men in Korea comprise 21 percent of men's cosmetics sales worldwide, according to ABC News, which cited Euromonitor International, a global marketing firm.
"Handsome has gone from strong, masculine to softer, feminine features," says Dr. Byung-Gun Kim, director of BK Plastic Surgery Hospital. "They are being referred to as 'flower men.'"
The term "flower men" is in reference the show "Boys over Flowers," based on a Japanese comic, which stars handsome guys with feminine features.
This epidemic hasn't breeched the western shores yet- at least not to the same extreme, says New York City rhinoplasty pro.
"While I haven't seen any 'flower men,' I have seen more men who are interested in maintaining their appearance," says Dr. Elliot Heller, an NYC plastic surgeon.
In the states, sexy describes the rugged features of men like Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Robert Pattinson; something Glamour confirmed with the results of their sexiest men of 2012.
However, in Korea, where job applications require a self-portrait, men who are not clean-shaven are seen as lazy and dismissed as candidates for dates and jobs.
So why are unshaven American men considered "hot" and not lazy slobs?
"Men can still be masculine and maintain their skin and hair," says Heller, an expert of the Brazilian butt lift.
It's noted that approximately 90 percent of good-looking, successful men are mistakenly deemed gay, says Ibrahim Mabwa in his article, "Why Successful Women Go for Rugged Looking Men."
An untrimmed beard and messy hair are a man's means of avoiding this stereotype.
What many guys fail to realize is that adored men like Clooney and Pitt are well-groomed guys. They take showers, wear Armani suits and go to the salon for haircuts.
"They invest wisely in caring for themselves and that is the reason their rugged looks are considered sexy and not sloppy," says Heller who also performs breast augmentation in New York City.
