Safety Recommendations to Keep Young Children Safe

Salt Lake City, Utah - Parents and caregivers need to teach children proper safety precautions from an early age. Learning Tree Schools, a Millcreek childcare center, offers some tips for parents.

Be sure all cabinets and drawers have locks that prevent children from being able to access dangerous materials inside.

Be sure all electrical outlets have covers that keep children from accessing them.

Be sure all doors to the outside have locks that children cannot reach.

Set your water heater to no higher than 120 degrees.

Turn all handles of pots and pans toward the back of the stove so children cannot grab them while cooking.

Place safety gates at all stairs, and make sure staircases have handrails that are easy to reach for all children.

"Parents should stay up-to-date on the newest safety news. It's also important to regularly inventory safety precautions used in the home," says Amy Moyes, co-director of the Salt Lake City daycares. "Dangers can change as children grow, so parents have to change the precautions they take as the children grow."

Parents and other caregivers should always have a well-stocked first aid kit on hand. Minor emergencies and accidents can happen any time, but having a first aid kit available can help parents quickly handle a situation that may arise. Already stocked first aid kits can be purchased from the Red Cross, but if parents stock their own, choose a container that is easy to carry and store. Some things to keep stocked include:

Sterile gauze

Medical

Different size bandages

Disinfecting wipes

Elastic bandages

Antibiotic ointment

Hydrocortisone cream

Acetaminophen and ibuprofen or other pain relievers

Plastic gloves

And when children are away from home at a child development center, parents should never have to worry about safety.

"Ask questions," says Moyes, Murray daycare provider. Learning Tree Schools' three Sandy-area preschools all have well stocked first aid kits and staff trained in first aid and CPR, as should all daycare centers.
