Zoloft Birth Defects Multidistrict Litigation Status Update
September 05, 2012 (PRLEAP.COM) Business News
(New York, NY, September 5, 2012) The Rottenstein Law Group, which represents clients with claims stemming from injuries and birth defects caused by the antidepressant Zoloft, is alerting the public to the updated status of the Zoloft Multidistrict Litigation (MDL) pending in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. As of August, 2012, there were approximately 152 cases in the Zoloft Multidistrict Litigation pending in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania (MDL 2342), according to the office of the clerk for that court. The lawsuits, which allege birth defects caused by Zoloft (sertraline), numbered 92 when the multidistrict litigation was first established on April 17, 2012, according to an April 2012 Lexis Nexis article.
Plaintiffs in 45 of the cases that were included in the MDL when it was first created opposed centralization, according to the article, but the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation disagreed, stating that "while the specific birth defects alleged vary somewhat among the plaintiffs, all actions will share discovery relating to the general medical causation; factual discovery will overlap concerning Pfizer's research, testing, and warnings; and expert discovery and Daubert motions will overlap to some degree."
The Rottenstein Law Group urges anyone whose child suffered birth defects as a result of the child's mother taking Zoloft during pregnancy to speak to a qualified personal injury lawyer. The firm's Zoloft Lawsuit Help Center, at www.rotlaw.com/zoloft/, contains social media features that allow for easy sharing on sites like Facebook and Twitter, which enables visitors to spread the word about the potential dangers associated with Zoloft.
