Michigan Fireworks Wholesaler Adds 150 New Positions as a Result of New Legislation

As a result of the Michigan Fireworks Safety Act going into effect on January 1, 2012, Mid-Michigan based Big Fireworks has seized the opportunity to expand its workforce.

The Michigan Fireworks Safety Act legalizes the sale, use and possession of federally-labeled 1.4g consumer fireworks such as bottle rockets, aerials, and firecrackers.

In addition to regulating consumer fireworks, the new legislation also created new employment opportunities for Michigan Residents.

Big Fireworks is the only Michigan-based wholesaler and importer focusing on consumer fireworks.

With the new law triggering an increased demand for consumer fireworks inside Michigan's borders, Big Fireworks has added more than 150 new job positions across the state.

"This new law is allowing us to do exactly what it was intended to do, and that is putting people to work here in Michigan", said Ben Bakken, Big Fireworks' CFO.

"The fact that the tax revenue is staying here in Michigan is wonderful and has gotten a lot of attention. At this time last year, we had about 60 Michigan employees, and this weekend I'll run payroll for more than 220 Michiganders. Many of these people are teachers looking to supplement their income, and others are hard-working neighbors that we are delighted to be able to provide with a paycheck."

The law has demonstrated its value to Michigan's economy with an increased investment in Michigan business and an overall morale boost for the Michigan job market.

Bakken said that the impact on their customers who have formed new small businesses and put people to work to sell fireworks this season is "immeasurable".

"While obviously much of our job growth is in seasonal positions, the permanent jobs we're adding in operations, finance, legal, and other departments are right here in Michigan as well," said Bakken.
