Hong Kong visitors can experience a unique cultural event this June when the annual Dragon Boat Water Parade of Tai O takes place.Held in the fishing village of Tai O on Lantau Island, the event occurs on June 23rd this year, the fifth day of the fifth lunar month.
Also known as the Tai O Deities Parade, it sees participating fishermen rowing dragon boats to visit the Yeung Hau, San Tsuen Tin Hau, Kwan Tai and Hung Shing temples the morning before, in order to deliver deity statues.
On the day of the festival itself, these statues are put on sacred sampans and towed by the dragon boats in an aquatic parade, with the purpose of pacifying wandering water ghosts.
Those living in the stilt houses along the edges of the waterways burn paper offerings as the boats pass by, before the statues are returned to their respective temples after the ritual.
Visitors can witness the historic event for free between the hours of 08:00 and 14:00 local time, with the location accessible by train, ferry and bus.
Cultural enthusiasts can browse a massive selection of Hong Kong hotels at AsiaRooms.com, including the Cosmo Hotel Mongkok.
