Clifford Law Offices is holding a two-hour program, "Ethical Issues in Mediation," Thursday, Feb. 16, from 2:30-4:30 p.m. on the web. The program has been approved for two hours of professional responsibility credit for Illinois lawyers. It's no coincidence that more and more retired judges are becoming mediators, long before one would expect some to leave the bench. Mediation has become quite popular in recent years because it has become successful as an alternative to dispute resolution.
Mediation is a process during which both sides and a third objective party are forced to focus on the case with an eye toward coming together to resolve complex issues that sometimes can be accomplished without the constraints, costs and risks of a trial. It may take more than a day, depending upon the number of parties and the complexity of the case, but it may be an excellent way to try to settle the matter before going to trial.
Robert Clifford, senior partner at Clifford Law Offices, offers some pointers on what to do and what you should know before entering into a mediation in an article that appeared in the February issue of the Chicago Lawyer, "Navigating the waters of mediation."
