The regatta has evolved considerably since it was inaugurated in 1990 as a two-race competition, with the Sultan of Selangor now acting as its official patron, meeting and greeting competing sailors each year.
 
Meanwhile, those onshore during the event can enjoy social opportunities such as regatta dinners, harbour racing and trishaw competitions.
