ABIM Foundation Announces New Board of Trustees Members

Philadelphia, PA - The ABIM Foundation announces two new members to its Board of Trustees, Mary D. Naylor, PhD, RN, and Catherine R. Lucey, MD, effective July 1, 2011. Dr. Naylor is the Marian S. Ware Professor in Gerontology and Director of the NewCourtland Center for Transitions and Health at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. Dr. Lucey currently holds the position of Interim Dean, College of Medicine, Vice Dean for Education at the Ohio State University (OSU) College of Medicine and Associate Vice President for Health Sciences Education for the OSU Office of Health Sciences. On September 1, she will begin her appointment as Vice Dean for Education at the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine.

Dr. Naylor was unanimously appointed to the Board at the spring meeting of the Trustees. As the new Chair of the American Board of Internal Medicine, Dr. Lucey is appointed to serve on the ABIM Foundation Board of Trustees.

"Dr. Naylor brings a unique perspective to the Board with her background and expertise in nursing," said Christine K. Cassel, MD, President and CEO of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the ABIM Foundation. "She has made many significant contributions to the health care field through her work in exploring chronic care management and transitional care models to improve health outcomes."

Dr. Naylor has received numerous awards in recognition of her research and leadership. In 2005, she was elected to the National Academy of Sciences, Institute of Medicine. In 2009, she received the Episteme Award from the Baxter International Foundation, in recognition of her team's efforts to test, refine, translate and scale the Transitional Care Model, an innovative approach proven to improve care and outcomes and decrease costs for high-risk chronically ill older adults and their family caregivers.

Dr. Naylor earned her master's degree in nursing and PhD from the University of Pennsylvania. She is the National Program Director for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Interdisciplinary Nursing Quality Research Initiative, member of the RAND Health Board, the National Quality Forum Board of Directors and serves as Chair of the Board of the Long-Term Quality Alliance. In 2010 she was appointed to the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC).

Board certified in internal medicine, Dr. Lucey's leadership at OSU College of Medicine was instrumental to the acceptance of their internal medicine residency program into the inaugural cohort of Educational Innovations Project sites by the Residency Review Committee of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

"Her insight and vision into what transformations are needed in this area will be invaluable assets to the Board's mission of advancing medical professionalism."

Dr. Lucey is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and is a prior council member for the Society of General Internal Medicine and the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine. In 2005, Dr. Lucey was named Professor of Internal Medicine.

The ABIM Foundation advances medical professionalism to improve the health care system by conducting research on emerging issues in medical professionalism; convening influential health care leaders and other key stakeholders to develop recommendations on how to foster medical professionalism; and disseminating findings to further promote engagement in and adoption of professionalism.

The Board of Trustees governs the ABIM Foundation, and both guides and helps advance the Foundation's work in medical professionalism. The Board includes national leaders in quality assessment and improvement, medical education, consumer advocates, policy makers, purchasers and physician leaders who have served on the American Board of Internal Medicine's Board of Directors.
