“It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that go-go swing.” Sy Smith brings a piece of her hometown to the Westside.

Few places in the States can boast having their own unique “sound.” Not an accent or a dialect or a specific use of local vernacular, but a genre of music all its own. So, when there exists an anomaly in a land that’s overwhelmed with mainstream jive and double-crossover pop, it should be recognized and celebrated; for that anomaly is a true survivor thriving only on the love shown by its local congregations. Go-Go music is one such survivor. Born from the leftovers of disco, remnants of funk and the necessity of musicians who wanted to keep working, go-go music made its permanent residency in Washington, DC and the surrounding metropolitan areas.Los Angeles-based recording artist Sy Smith isn’t in DC anymore, so she won’t be lecturing about go-go at Georgetown, George Mason or George Washington Universities. She does plan, however, to bring a piece of her hometown to the Westside! On Friday, October 28th, Sy Smith presents Go-Go Live Part 2 at
Temple Bar in Santa Monica. This Emmy-nominated singer-songwriter (best known for her background vocals with artist such as Whitney Houston, Usher, and Macy Gray ; and her voice from the network series “Soul Food” where she duets the theme song with the legendary Al Green) is determined to bring
Go-Go to the west coast, even if it’s just for one night because she says “most people think go-go is doing
‘Da Butt’ and that’s all they know. But go-go is so much more than that.”
WHO: In support of her sizzling debut album “The Syberspace Social,” breakout soul star Sy Smith returns to hot Los Angeles area venue Temple Bar.
WHAT: Sy Smith has organized a 12-piece band (an emcee, horns and percussion to supplement her existing band affectionately known as Deeznutz) to bring these familiar radio sounds to the stage for an immersion course in the ways of Go-Go culture. Temple Bar located at 1026 Wilshire in Santa Monica will provide the stage, Sy and Deeznutz will provide the lesson. Come prepared to learn – and in this case, school really is cool. Sy will perform tunes from her critically-acclaimed debut LP "The Syberspace Social" as well as radio favorites incorporating unique percussive go-go rhythms.
