Atlanta, GA - How to Get Out of Grad School: Eight Insights on Finishing your Master's and Doctorate in Record Time has just been released. Graduating with a Master's and Doctoral degree is not as simple as taking classes and making good grades. Graduate programs require so much more. Some students can get stuck spending years or even decades in graduate school without ever earning their degree. As a graduate student advocate, author Dr. Melissa Read shares her insights on how to graduate from Master's and Doctoral programs in less than a lifetime. Dr. Read is an expert at making timely progress in grad school. Read earned a Ph.D. in Cognitive and Neural Sciences with a major in Human Factors Psychology and a minor in Computer Programming in three years. This amount of time included her Master’s work and was quite unusual for students in her program - several of which dropped out or spent a decade or more progressing toward the Ph.D. Upon graduation with her Ph.D., Dr. Read had straight A’s and had more conference talks, posters and journal publications per unit time than anyone she knew in her program. "So many people tell you how to get into grad school but no one ever tells you how to get out." says Dr. Read. "Students need to plan their exit from graduate school as carefully as they plan their entrance because there is no retirement plan for earning a Doctorate. I earned my Master's and Doctorate in record time and in this book, I share my insights so that other grad students can do the same."
Timely progress in grad school appears to run in Dr. Read's family. Dr. Read's mother earned her graduate degree at an Ivy League school in half the time that it took her colleagues. "Watching my Mom and her classmates all those years and listening carefully, I gained insights on how to effectively make progress in graduate school before I even arrived — insights that most of my colleagues would not come to realize until they had spent many years in our program," Dr. Read said. Much had changed since her mother first went to graduate school, but the timeless insights that Dr. Read came to realize have stayed the same.
