NYC Eye Surgeon Dr. Gregory Pamel Selected to Serve as Principal Investigator in FDA Clinical Trial on Corneal Collagen Crosslinking
April 15, 2011 (PRLEAP.COM) Health News
Dr. Gregory Pamel of Pamel Vision & Laser Group, a comprehensive New York City LASIK practice, has been selected as the principal investigator for an FDA clinical trial evaluating the safety and efficiency of corneal collagen crosslinking for keratoconus and ectasia. Dr. Pamel was one of 10 physicians in the United States to be selected to participate in the trial sponsored by Topcon Medical Systems, Inc. In July 2010, Dr. Pamel became the first physician to successfully perform corneal collagen crosslinking using the VEGA UV-A Illumination System. Keratoconus is a serious disorder that leads to the thinning of the eye's cornea, eventually resulting in an irregular "cone-like" shape. In individuals who suffer from keratoconus, the light rays focused onto the retina are distorted, thereby causing blurred vision and "irregular" astigmatism, which cannot be corrected with glasses or contact lenses. Although keratoconus is often observed in patients who have a family history of the disease, it can also appear in postoperative vision correction patients, in which case the keratoconus-like condition is referred to as ectasia.
At his state-of-the-art Manhattan LASIK and eye care practice, Dr. Pamel offers a range of effective keratoconus and ectasia treatments, including corneal collagen crosslinking with riboflavin eye drops. Although the current treatment has proven to be effective, as a widely recognized and compassionate eye surgeon, Dr. Pamel is always thrilled to participate in the development and research of new treatments. He is proud to serve as the principal investigator in the latest FDA trials for groundbreaking treatments that will bring new hope to keratoconus and ectasia patients.
