Adventure Book Retailer Supports the Equestrian Community

One never ceases to be amazed at the dedication and commitment of the country's volunteers. At Circle F Horse Rescue Society, they feed the horses, groom them, exercise them, look after their health needs, clean the shelter, keep up the facilities, raise money, do the organizational things and a variety of odds and ends, all in good spirit. In the process they’ve saved countless horses from slaughter.

Why do they do it? "For the love of horses" is the basic reason. They had horses in the past and want to spend time in the horse world again. Or, they cannot afford a horse but volunteering gives them an outlet to be with horses. Or, they may have a horse and want to extend their experience and time to assist others. Horses, for the volunteer, have an inner bonding, a language that only a true horse lover knows.

Circle F is one of those selfless organizations that continues to thrive only because such volunteers exist. That said, staying solvent is an ongoing challenge for Circle F. In part, they’re dealing with the issue by looking for creative ways to raise awareness and additional funds. “It’s in this way,” says Trevor Paetkau, proprietor of Moraine Adventure Books, “that we hope to have a positive impact.” What Paetkau is talking about is the revenue sharing arrangement he and Circle F have entered which will see a substantial portion of net revenues from books sold on Moraine’s Equestrian Site turned over to Circle F. The results will most likely be modest, but extra revenue is extra revenue.

Benefits flow to the Paetkau’s company as well. Moraine Adventure Books is a new organization that has contributed to organizations as diverse as the World Wildlife Fund, organizers of sailing's 8 Metre World Championships, and local schools. It's through contributions such as these that Moraine Adventure Book's proprietor, Trevor Paetkau hopes to forge ties and earn goodwill with his target constituency.

"Lord knows it tough making money in the book business, and it’s tougher still when you give away as much product as we have been," say Paetkau. "Still, it’s the way I've chosen to structure my company, and time will tell whether it pays off financially. Yes, I'd like to directly measure the return we get from our contributions, but the truth is, ROI isn’t really the point … and at the end of day, we'll know we've built something and been an asset to the community, regardless of how many books go out the door.”
