IntelliNet and Motorola Solutions Successfully Complete Wi-Fi Data Offload Interoperability Testing with 3GPP I-WLAN Solution

IntelliNet Technologies, a leading provider of mobile data offload solutions, announced that it has recently completed interoperability testing between its Wireless Services Gateway and Motorola Solutions' (NYSE: MSI) portfolio of 802.11n Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) controllers and access points (APs). The testing demonstrated the seamless and secure transfer of a 2.5G/3G data session from the licensed 2.5G/3G network to the WLAN without intervention by the user. Significantly the secure tunnel created by the IntelliNet gateway allows direct access to the walled garden services of the network operator. "IntelliNet is pleased to work with Motorola Solutions to prove the viability of the 3GPP standard Interworking Wireless LAN (I-WLAN) technique for offloading data traffic from cellular networks," said Anjan Ghosal, president and CEO of IntelliNet Technologies. "Wireless network operators are scrambling to offload the tidal wave of data traffic created by the amazing popularity of smart phones while being able to authenticate subscribers and transparently allow access to hot spot services."
The IntelliNet Wireless Services Gateway (WSG) is a carrier-grade platform that can support both standards-based and innovative approaches to interworking with cellular networks. The WSG builds routing intelligence on traffic from a Wi-Fi path based on operator-provided policy. The traffic can be extended either to the cellular core network or to the Internet. Since the operator's core network requires trusted device access, the WSG also enables authentication to the core network and secure transport access.
"As more operators look to Wi-Fi technology as the optimum data offload option, it is very important they consider end-to-end solutions with proven 3GPP interoperability," said Imran Akbar, vice president, Motorola Solutions. "The interoperability testing of Motorola Solutions Wi-Fi infrastructure with 3GPP systems ensures operators have access to an offload solution that is reliable, secure, and able to handle the business-critical applications that today's increasingly mobile workforce requires."
Motorola offers 802.11n WLAN access technologies that range from small factor "wall plates" to high-power outdoor APs with mesh capabilities. Built on the latest WiNG 5 architecture, its business-critical APs and controllers provide a high degree of scalability, security and reliability. These field-proven solutions are part of a broad portfolio of wireless network solutions that also includes one of the industry's most advanced point-to-point, point-to-multipoint and mesh wide area network infrastructure technologies. This allows operators to cost effectively build out a high-performance, highly secure and manageable indoor and outdoor offload solution.
The 3GPP Interworking WLAN for Data Offload (IWLAN) standard introduced the specifications for interworking WLAN with cellular networks. These standards continue the progression to enabling WLAN connectivity to the evolved packet core for LTE-4G networks. The standards-based infrastructure makes a compelling case to support the infrastructure for the data offload path. IWLAN was carefully designed to support rich data services such as streaming audio and video over the unlicensed spectrum. The fundamental bridge that IWLAN provides is to build a trusted relation between a non-cellular entity and the core network.
