Motorcycling license requirements need to be toughened

The implementation of traffic rules and license standard in most of the States in the United States are now being put to scrutiny. Riders are saying that the regulations are now easily violated and are laughable. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motorcycle fatalities have increased to 3,067 from 2,116 in four-years time starting from 1997 to 2001. Fatalities have increased to 27.3 per 100 million vehicle miles in 2000. Motorcycle fatalities involved 40 and above age bracket. Many of them did not previously hold motorcycle licenses.

This increase was attributed to the enormous motorcycle registrations. Another factor was the driver’s insufficiency of experience and recklessness in driving. In this regard, the riders are requesting for a rigid implementation of the enacted laws on traffic and a more dogmatic approach in approving motorcycle licenses.
