OGDEN, Utah – The Boy Scouts of America will once again host their annual Order of the Arrow convention, known as a Conclave, at Ogden High School. The event attracts hundreds of teenage boys who are members of the Order of the Arrow, the national honor society of the Boy Scouts of America. It will be held April 21 - 23 at Ogden High School.
The Order of the Arrow honors those boys who are elected by the members of their troop as Scouting’s very best. A smaller percentage of boys receive this honor than attain the rank of Eagle Scout.
The conclave features instruction, spiritual uplift, and “plenty of fun,” according to James Cook, 19, of Rexburg, Idaho. Cook was elected as the W5D Section Chief by the youth members who are known as “Arrowmen,” and he is the principle organizer of the event.
Cook is an Eagle Scout and graduated from Rexburg High School in 2003.
“The OA has helped me to become more service oriented, and has helped me to realize the value of work. I feel obligated to serve this section,” said Cook.
Cook’s duties will include travel to national meetings with the leaders from other areas of the country to plan events and activities for OA members.
Events and activities will take place from Friday through Sunday. There will be instruction in various popular Scouting activities, leadership training, and other programs to help the youth and adult leaders improve their skills. There are over 85 classes for both youth and adults.
Other events include games, competitions, and a show. One of the most popular activities include a Native American pow wow or dance competition, and Indian village. Order of the Arrow members learn from the teachings and traditions of Native Americans.
Church services for many denominations will be provided on Sunday, followed by closing ceremonies.
Other activities include movies, chess tournaments, and other games. The Scouts will camp in tents outside the school, in travel trailers in the parking lot, or just in a sleeping bag on the floor in the school gym. All meals are provided in the school cafeteria.
The Boy Scouts of America sponsor Order of the Arrow lodges in each council throughout the United States. The country is broken up into Sections of several lodges. Section W5D is made up of OA members from the Great Salt Lake Council (Salt Lake area), Utah National Parks Council (southern Utah), Trapper Trails Council (northern Utah and part of Wyoming), and Grand Teton Council (southern Idaho).
