Melbourne hotels will be the destination for thousands of tennis fans next month as the Australian Open returns to the Victorian capital.

Set to take place at Melbourne Park between January 17th and 30th 2011, the event is one of the four major tournaments of the tennis season, alongside Wimbledon and the French and US opens.

Given its importance, the biggest players in the world will be keen to kick-start their 2011 campaigns with victory in Australia, just as Roger Federer did this year.

The former number one saw off the UK's Andy Murray in the 2010 edition, overcoming his opponent in a 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 win, while Serena Williams beat Justine Henin 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 to take the women's title.

Single sessions of the tournament will be held at the Rod Laver and Hisense arenas, both of which are accessible via a free tram from the CBD - home to much of the cheap accommodation Melbourne has available.

Tickets for the tournament are on sale now, with ground passes offering admission every day between January 17th and 26th costing A$29, while access to the final four days costs A$19.

Seats for a single session at Hisense Arena start at A$49.90, with the same package costing A$64.90 and above at Rod Laver Arena.
