Mom of Premature Baby Starts Free Magazine and Website for ParentsPreemie Magazine reaches out to fast-growing community of preemie parents
SPRINGFIELD, VIRGINIA - In September 2003 first time Mom Deborah Discenza got the surprise of her life when she gave birth to her daughter Becky ten weeks early. Out of her experience, Ms. Discenza saw a great void in the parenting community and has since launched Preemie Magazine, a free nationwide print publication and free online community for parents and professionals that care for preemies from birth into the school years.
With the March of Dimes stating that nationally 1 in 8 pregnancies ends in premature birth and that the numbers are on the rise, the preemie parent community is large and growing with each year. According to the March of Dimes PeriStats website, the United States alone had over 480,000 births that were prior to 37 weeks gestation (40 weeks is the considered full gestation) in 2002.
"With our online community and print magazine, we are the resource for the preemie community," comments Discenza, Publisher of the publication. "Parents of preemies are hungry for information from the time the child is born to well into the school years. They learn early on that research has shown that prematurity can have long-term effects medically and developmentally. So with Preemie Magazine and its online community, we're here to fill the void that leaves these parents feeling scared and alone."
To bring about more information and a connection between parents, Preemie Magazine's print edition provides parents and professionals with information across the lifespan of the premature child, from birth into the school years. Its online community allows its audience to connect with one another with forums, scheduled live chats, a large listing of resources as well as a growing list of support groups and play groups.
