New Drug and Alcohol Video Series: Treating the Individual, Not the Disease
December 01, 2010 (PRLEAP.COM) Health News
Focus is placed on the individual and not the alcohol addiction as the center of care in a new two-part video series by The Recovery Place. This client-centered approach explains how alcohol abuse is a symptom of a disease, and specialized drug and alcohol rehabilitation is required if recovery is a long term possibility.John Cates, CEO of The Recovery Place clarifies the client-centered approach in these new videos, and why this works more effectively than alcohol treatment centers that only focus on the alcohol abuse. "This isn't a program about drinking. The drinking is just a symptom that reflects the problems or issues that are individual to the person. The behaviors they exhibit may have a commonality, but are not the root issue." John has been clean himself for ten years, and is an example of the success of this specialized alcoholism treatment approach.
Alcohol addiction can stem from single or combined traumatic, emotional or physiologic issues. Many individuals have a dual diagnosis, which is a drug or alcohol abuse issue combined with one or more psychological and emotional issues. Depression, anxiety, childhood trauma, obsessive-compulsive disorders, phobias, post-traumatic stress, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia are only some of the problems that can be present with drug and alcohol abuse. If only one issue is treated, then relapse is almost guaranteed.
These new videos from The Recovery Place discuss the complexity of treating individuals with alcohol and drug addiction.
