The November issue of Money Magazine features sisterpreneurs, Paula and Karen Batchelor in "Lessons from Detroit", an article on how entrepreneurs are turning lemons into lemonade in a tough economy. The Batchelors are social media managers whose startup, Color Me Social, helps small businesses figure out how to develop strategy and start using social media marketing.Entrepreneur and single mom of a 6 year old, Paula Batchelor from Royal Oak, Michigan didn't expect to find herself facing foreclosure and financial struggle after working for 11 years with a health insurance company in Detroit. Her job ended when she took a buyout because she thought she would be laid off if she didn't. This transition landed Paula in the middle of one of the toughest job markets in the country. She had great skills as a graphic design artist and project manager but no opportunities.
But Paula had a sister, Karen - formerly an attorney, now a life coach. Karen had learned how to use social media to build her coaching practice and was repeatedly asked for help by other entrepreneurs. Seeing an opportunity ahead, Karen suggested that she and Paula fill a need in the niche of small business owners who are trying to figure out how to use social media marketing just like bigger companies do.
So the Batchelor sisterpreneurs combined their skills and founded their company, Color Me Social in June. They focus on working with time and tech challenged small business owners who want to start using social media in their business but don't know how or where to start. The Batchelors help make social media make sense especially for a generation of non-techie business owners who didn't grow up with computers.
Their Metro Detroit startup business didn't come in time to save Paula's house from foreclosure. She and her daughter are moving in with Karen. Despite this and a tough economy, the Batchelor sisters aren't afraid to take a chance and turn lemons into lemonade.
