AsiaRooms.com can announce that holidaymakers staying in Seminyak hotels later this year will be able to see one of Bali's most famous festivals - Galungan - taking place around them. The event is usually held twice a year, occurring once every 210 days in the Balinese calendar Pawukon.
Wednesday December 8th is due to mark the beginning of the next Galungan, which will run until December 18th.
As the most important celebration of the year for Balinese Hindus, the event marks the triumph of virtue (Dharma) over evil (Adharma).
It is a time for food and family, with regional delicacies prepared for the occasion and special meals held throughout the ten-day festival.
Balinese people believe the gods descend to visit the Earth during Galungan and offerings are made to please the returning ancestral spirits.
Other festival traditions include the penjor, a tall bamboo pole that is decorated and attached to the right side of a household's entrance as part of the celebrations.
Adorned with young coconut leaves, fruit and cakes, these items are accompanied by small bamboo altars outside the homes of people across the island.
The last day of the holiday, on which the gods are thought to leave the Earth, is known as Kuningan.
