eLearning Network holds coffee morning for cancer care

The eLearning Network (ELN), the UK’s leading professional association for users and developers of e-learning, broke with tradition in two senses for its September meeting (on 30th September). The meeting – which, as usual, attracted a ‘sell out’ audience – was held at a new venue, the Thistle City Hotel in London’s Barbican, in order to accommodate the particular demands of the day’s programme.

The ELN’s second break with tradition was that it used the morning’s break for coffee to take part in the ‘Macmillan Cancer Relief’s World's Biggest Coffee Morning’ and so helped to raise nearly £100 for Macmillan Cancer Relief’s work in supporting people living with cancer.

Vaughan Waller, the ELN’s chairman, commented: “This year, Macmillan aims to raise £5.8m from the World's Biggest Coffee Morning – and, as the date for the coffee morning coincided with our September meeting, we thought that we’d like to help Macmillan achieve its target. Everyone knows someone who is living with cancer and we all recognise the excellent work that Macmillan Cancer Relief staff do in supporting these people and their families.”

In addition to helping Macmillan Cancer Relief achieve its target, ELN members explored the five step ‘ADDIE’ instructional design model by collaborating to develop a ‘finished’ piece of e-learning from scratch during the day. The specialists leading each part of the process were:
• Jan Seabrook, of Conation Technologies (who led the ‘analysis’ phase of the project)
• James Midgley, of LogicaCMG (design)
• Neil Lasher, of Trainer1 (development)
• Independent consultant, Nige Howarth (implementation)
• Alex Welsh, of Head Light Communications (evaluation)

“In addition to creating a module of an e-learning prgoreame from scratch, the delegates were able to take away comprehensive sets of tools and checklists,” said Waller. “And, they had a cup of coffee or two in aid of a good cause!”
