Workshops in Mali

The workshops take place in two locations: one in Bamako for Ballets & Bambara style teachings, & the other in Sibi, land of the Mandingue people where the djembe came from. In Sibi, you will experience the Mandinque village-way of teaching.One week of workshops includes:* Daily drumming &/or dance classes all taught by Malian master drummers and dancers. You can learn two methods of teaching, either the traditional way or the Ballet version.

* Cultural & traditional history lessons

* Optional classes include, African cooking, traditional crafts, hair braiding, various West African languages, initiations to the Cora, Balafon, Yabara and talking drum.

* Optional Activities: Invitations to traditional ceremonies & festivals with participatory drumming & dancing, Meeting with Mandinque healers, and Divination by the fox in Dogon country.

Tour Sites

Sibi: Guests will stay in Sibi, a Mandingue Village located 50 km from Bamako, the Capital of Mali. There you will have classes at the "Campement Village Kamadian," which is a school of Mandingo traditional music and dance. The teachers come from several Mandingo villages. There are 15 sites to visit in Sibi. An island for people who want to take a ride on the Niger River. There are also beaches & for those who want to camp, bring your tent. The Kamadian Mountaintop retreat is a peaceful place for people who want to relax after classes.

Visit Mopti, the Venice of Mali, which is the meeting point of Dogon's, Peulh's & other ethnic groups & Bandiangara, the entrance into the amazing Dogon Country.Dogon Country: At last your dreams will come true to learn & visit the legendary & mysterious Dogon Country & Mopti (the Venice of Mali). Accomodations

For 3 days housing is a double occupancy at a luxurious Hotel The Djenne in Bamako. Two meals served per day. In Campement Village Kamadian housing is single occupancy, with two meals served per day.

Yaya Diallo was born in Mali, West Africa. He is a member of the Minianka (Bamana) people. He was raised in a culture that works, worships, lives and breathes to the beat of the drum. An instrument for transmitting traditional knowledge among the Minianka, the drum is the focal point of Yaya's life story, and his link through the universal medium of music with the western world. He speaks Bamara, Senufo, French and English.

Yaya Diallo, a major custodian of West African music and culture has acquired an international reputation as a master drummer, musican, composer, danser, healer, teacher, lecturer, storyteller, "Healing Drum Tours" guide to Mali and author. His book "The Healing Drum: African Wisdom Teachings" is widely available through bookstores.
