Chainsaw Carving Artists Add to Local Economy.

It may not be big money when compared to Boeing or Microsoft, but local chainsaw carvers should be proud of the good they are doing for the economy. Most chainsaw carvers are artists that have tried other mediums without financial success. Now, they are finding that they can make full time livings as chainsaw carvers. Even part timers are finding that they can add extra money to their family’s budgets. It may come as a surprise to some people, but chainsaw carving outfits are doing substantial business.

For example, Kenny’s NW Experience, with galleries in Snoqualmie and Allyn, has purchased over $500,000 in chainsaw carvings from local chainsaw carvers over the past 5 years. These chainsaw carvers have also consigned and sold over $300,000 in chainsaw carvings through the same galleries. At the retail price, this is well over $1,000,000 in chainsaw carvings decorating yards, offices, and log cabins. In turn, this money flows back into local economies.

The challenge for the local chainsaw carving industry is that the demand for carvings greatly outstrips the supply. There are only so many chainsaw carvers in the state, and the demand for carvings seems to be endless. As a matter of fact, the demand for chainsaw carvers has become so great that a local school for chainsaw carvers has been created. The school, George Kenny School of Chainsaw Carving, has taught over 100 people how to chainsaw carve over the past 2 years. The students are coming in from all over the country, spending a week at the school, and then going back to their towns as chainsaw carvers.

In order to introduce artists, and non-artists, to chainsaw carving as a career, a free information day will be held at the Kenny’s NW Experience in Snoqualmie. Those interested in learning chainsaw carving can speak with George Kenny, former students, and pro carvers. They will have the opportunity to learn how the school works, explore the workshop, and see what’s in it for them. There is absolutely no fee for visiting the school that day. Info on Scholarships, apprenticeships, and specials will be available.
