Rick's Fencing Announces Winner of Ugliest Fence Contest

Portland, OR – The verdict is in: Alicia Miller of Salem, Ore., is the proud owner of the Northwest's ugliest fence. As the winner of Rick's Custom Fencing & Decking's annual Ugliest Fence Contest, Miller will receive 100 feet of free fencing.

The Ugliest Fence Contest took place this year during Rick's 30th anniversary celebration. Throughout the month of June, the fencing and decking retailer asked homeowners to submit pictures of their ugly fences. Rick's received dozens of photos of old, weathered, sagging and broken fences.

The Ugliest Fence Contest encourages homeowners to be proactive about maintaining or replacing their old, dilapidated cedar fences. Many homeowners don't realize the amount of maintenance cedar fences require, particularly in the Pacific Northwest.

"A well cared for cedar fence can brighten up your property, but one that has been let go can quickly become a neighborhood eyesore," said Rick Stanley, a top Northwest fencing and decking expert and founder of Rick's Fencing. "For homeowners who don't want to sand and stain every few years, there are plenty of low-maintenance fencing options available, such as aluminum and vinyl fences."

Rick's offers these tips for getting the maximum life out of your cedar fence:

— Restain your cedar fence every 2-3 years with a natural oil-based, semi-transparent stain containing UV protectants. Exposure to rain and sun does more than just fade the color; it causes the wood to deteriorate more quickly.

— Regularly clean off any leaves or other organic debris that have built up on fence rails or become wedged between boards. These can accelerate rot and cause instability over time.

— Fill in any knotholes as quickly as possible to prevent termites and other critters from moving in.
