London, UK – It's a classic idea – fully immersive, encompassing photographs, offering a viewer the ability to look up, down, around, even behind. It's a logical next step in the evolution of still captures, so simple and analogous to normal human vision that the concept itself does not so much require imagination to grasp, but rather simply begs that you forget about the last 180 years of photography. Or perhaps just forget about the frame it's been stuck in.

Since the 1850s photographers have been capturing wide-angle panoramic photographs. With the 1990s came the adoption of VR panoramas – immersive, interactive virtual environments allowing a viewer to pan, zoom, and even move in any direction. But the act of capturing VR panoramas has forever been a complex hit-or-miss process.

Since the start of 2002 EnterNetica (UK) Ltd., an international, London-based next-generation R&D solutions enterprise, has been working on technologies to streamline and simplify that process. Corresponding with the end of a five-continent volumetric photography tour by its award-winning VolumePhoto Team, EnterNetica in August released two new products representing the fruits of the last three years' labors.

“We're very excited about VolumeView technologies. For the past twenty years digital panoramic photography has shown great promise, but the quality and efficiency just hasn't been up to par. What we're working on here is going to extend the applications of panoramic photography beyond simple scene capture,” explains EnterNetica president Andronik Nazaretian. “With the opening of our VolumePhoto Team's VPhoto gallery in July, as well as our collaboration on various cultural projects like the Virtual Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, we're hoping to see widespread adoption of this next-generation format.”

VolumeView technologies, a catch-all for the collective works of EnterNetica's independent photography and videography units, represent a basis for capturing, storing, and publishing fully-immersive still image and video content.

“What's most amazing, however, is where this technology is going to go in the next ten to fifteen years. Simple, flawless image stitching is only the beginning – what we're going to see before the end of the next decade is the introduction of realistic, completely immersive volumetric worlds, the creation of interactive volumetric environments,” commented Mr. Nazaretian.

About Volumetric Photography
Volumetric photography relies on the ultra-accurate stitching of pairs of 180º fisheye images. These fisheye captures are mathematically transformed and mapped onto two opposing hemispheres, which are then seamlessly joined, creating a spherical environment. This spherical environment can then be viewed and navigated at any angle, and published on the internet.
