Lockheed Martin Adopts All-Java Perst Embedded Database for Defense R&D
June 08, 2010 (PRLEAP.COM) Business News
June 7, 2010 - McObject® announced that Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT), one of the largest global defense and security technology companies, will use McObject's Perst™ all-Java embedded database management system (DBMS) in a research and development application for the Medium Extended Air Defense Systems (MEADS) project of the United States and NATO partners.Developers in the Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company chose McObject's Perst object-oriented, open source embedded database after a make-or-buy analysis found economic and time-to-market benefits in licensing a commercial, off-the-shelf (COTS) high performance DBMS rather than creating the technology in-house. Lockheed Martin has licensed Perst for commercial use from McObject, with initial integration planned in a trial software test component.
In choosing Perst, Lockheed Martin joins a growing list of prominent defense and aerospace companies that have adopted McObject's streamlined, highly optimized database systems for the embedded software in their cutting-edge technology. McObject's MilAero customers include BAE Systems (combat jet avionics), EADS (pilot assistance program), Boeing (combat helicopter on-board systems), SAIC (avionics testbench), STM Defense Technologies (battle tank command and control), EF Johnson Technologies (radio communications), Sandel Avionics, Northrop Grumman and others.
The MEADS mobile air and missile defense system will provide capabilities beyond any other current or planned air and missile defense system. It will incorporate the hit-to-kill PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement (MSE) Missile, along with 360-degree surveillance and fire control sensors, netted-distributed battle management and communication centers, and high-firepower launchers. MEADS will offer both superior battlefield protection with enhanced flexibility, enabling it to protect military forces, equipment and other assets against tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles and aircraft. MEADS will replace Patriot air defense technology in the United States and Germany and Nike Hercules systems in Italy.
MEADS will be easily transported to a deployment area, where it will keep pace with fast-moving military forces. Its open architecture enables system-of-system integration, to support tailoring of missions to support operation goals. A major MEADS benefit is its ability to deliver more firepower with fewer operators, resulting in dramatic efficiency gains and cost savings over current systems.
The United States funds 58 percent of the MEADS program, while Germany and Italy provide 25 percent and 17 percent respectively as partners in the NATO Medium Extended Air Defense System Management Organization (NAMEADSMO). Participating manufacturers are MBDA in Italy, LFK in Germany and Lockheed Martin in the United States, with the program management agency located in Huntsville, AL.
"The MEADS goal of providing greater firepower with less manpower than today's systems virtually guarantees that system developers will seek out the most advanced embedded software and hardware technology to incorporate. McObject is pleased that Lockheed Martin has identified Perst among the off-the-shelf software components for research and development toward that end," said Chris Mureen, McObject's chief operating officer.
Perst and Perst Lite are part of McObject's family of powerful small footprint, high performance embedded database software products. The eXtremeDB® embedded in-memory database from McObject is used widely in devices including MP3 players, WiMAX base stations, digital TVs, telecom/network communications equipment and military/aerospace technology. Perst is available for Java and .NET, including Java ME and .NET Compact Framework. CA's Wily Technology credits Perst with delivering a shortened development cycle and a ten-fold performance improvement within its real-time Java application.
