Popular nostalgia website DoYouRemember.co.uk. has been selected by the British Library to join the UK Web Archiving Consortium’s pilot collection. The Consortium’s aim is to preserve chosen web sites for the benefit of future researchers, and the British Library - which leads the Consortium - is focusing on sites which reflect key aspects of UK culture.
“I’m delighted this site has been selected for inclusion in such an important collection”, says Michael Johnson, founder of DoYouRemember.co.uk. “The site is driven entirely by visitors’ memories of the 1970s, 80s and 90s, so it provides a very detailed snapshot of what was of enduring importance to us during those decades.”
“This site has been selected to represent aspects of UK documentary heritage, and as a result, will remain available to researchers in the future”, said Alison Hill, Web Archive Curator, British Library. “If our current pilot scheme is successful, the archived copy of the web site will subsequently form part of the permanent collection.”
In just over a year since its inception, DoYouRemember.co.uk is now registering around a quarter of a million page views per month, making it one of the biggest pop-culture sites on the web.
