Santa Monica, CA (April 28, 2010) - Two young entrepreneurs recently completed a cross-country journey down the length of Route 66 - in a $1,000 car. Chris Hedgecock and Jorge Gonzalez flew to Chicago, purchased a 1973 Cadillac Eldorado for $1,000 from a classified ad on CarsForaGrand.com, and hit the road in an effort to prove that you can get a decent ride at a lower price than you might expect. When asked the most common question, "Why?" Chris Hedgecock, founder of Cars for a Grand, said "Most people we meet don't even think you can get a car that runs for $1,000. We set out to prove them wrong in the most literal way we could think of, and Route 66 was a natural choice. It's really the most famous road in our entire country and its 2600 miles made for a decent challenge for any car, let alone one for a grand. In this era of tough economic times and hefty government bailouts, we bought a 37 year old GM car for $1,000 and hit the highway."
Chris and Jorge purchased the car on April 9th in Thomson, IL where it was reportedly kept in a barn and summer driven. After throwing down $1,000 in cash, the guys stopped at a local GM dealership for a tuneup and to make sure the car was safe for themselves and the other drivers along Route 66. They had a blowout in St. Louis and had to get a new set of tires, but all in all from Chicago to LA the total car cost was under $1400.
The trip lasted 17 days and is documented in its entirety on a video blog the duo maintained throughout the trip. They also posted photos, updates and interacted with fans along the journey through their facebook page and twitter profile.
