AsiaRooms.com reports people who are staying in accommodation in Phuket towards the end of next month should make sure that they keep on eye on the skies.

From May 21st until 23rd, the Thai resort will be playing host to its first ever paragliding competition.

Approximately 40 contestants from countries around the world are expected to arrive in Phuket for the event.

Among the challenges that will await the high-flying athletes are spot landings, passing gates, fun flights and even fancy dress flying.

Those who want to watch some of the aerial action should head down to Naiharn Beach between 8:00 and 18:00 (local time) on any of the three days that the competition is running.

President of the Paragliding Phuket Association Prasert Theplaong announced that the Fun Fly would go ahead back in February, after receiving agreement from the region's governor.

Organisers are estimating that more than 150 flights will take place during the event.

People staying in accommodation in Thailand who want to have a go at the high-flying sport often head to the Kho Dang area of Phuket because it features a cliff face which is good for take offs, as well as favourable air conditions, according to Phuket Wan.
