Gauguin first began to gain popularity in 1889 when he and some of his friends exhibited their work during the Paris World's Fair, showcasing their displays at the Café des Arts, which was owned at the time by a man named Volpini.

Gaugin's works included a series of prints which he had initially made at the instigation of Theo van Gogh as a way of drawing attention to his paintings, and the prints became known over time as the Volpini suite.

Visitors can take in the wonders of the 11 zincographs, all of them created on canary-yellow paper at what is considered one of the most crucial moments in Gauguin's career. Offering an extensive overview of his central themes, the pieces range from an exploration of the landscapes of the Martinique to scenes from Pont-Aven and the Arles. One of the premier art collections in the world, Paul Gauguin's Breakthrough into Modernity is set to lead 2010's art scene on a global basis.
