LAKEVILLE, ST. PAUL AND MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – Cosmopolitan Orthodontics, a Minnesota orthodontics practice, soon will wrap up its observance of National Children's Dental Health Month, which is held annually in February. Minnesota Orthodontist Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth, who owns Cosmopolitan Orthodontics, and Dr. Trudy Bonvino, a Minnesota Invisalible braces expert who is the orthodontist on staff there, participate in the educational campaign each year by reenforcing good oral care habits in school children throughout the St. Paul, Minneapolis and Lakeville area.
The American Dental Association sponsors the campaign each year, and this year they came up with some eye-catching posters that really got students' attention, St. Paul Invisalign provider Dr. Eisenhuth said. The poster featured a message from the McGrinn Twins, Flossy and Buck: "For a sparkly smile, remember to brush and floss every day!" on one side. On the back was a message geared toward pre-teens and teens: "Rock your smile."
"We work to make sure children realize how important good oral health is to their development," said Eisenhuth, a Minnesota braces expert. "We're learning more and more about how oral health can be an indicator of overall health in adulthood, so the earlier we can get children on the path to taking proper care of their teeth, the healthier we hope they'll be in the long run."
The NCDHM message has reached millions of people throughout the country over the years thanks to their campaign materials, which have helped spread the message to generations of children.
"Teaching children about developing good habits, combined with professional teeth cleaning and regular dental check-ups, helps promote what we hope becomes a lifetime of healthy gums and teeth for children," said Minnesota orthodontist Dr. Eisenhuth.
In other NCDHM news, many Minnesota dental professionals participated in in an event on Feb. 5-6 where they donated their time to provide free care to thousands of low-income children. This was part of a nationwide event known as Give Kids A Smile, which is held in conjunction with NCDHM. NCDHM began as a one-day observance in Cleveland, Ohio on Feb. 3, 1941, followed by a one-week event in Akron that same month, according to the ADA.
