Long Beach, CA., September 16, 2005 – With the release of the damaged brilliance of L.G.F.C.A. by therefore, progressive indie label Sounds Are Active has implemented Creative Commons licenses on a quarter of their catalog. Six full length albums and EP’s, in addition to individual tracks from twenty-two other releases, are available for download at www.soundsareactive.com.Musician, writer and label curator Chris Schlarb spoke about the implementation of the CC license, “We want to encourage podcasters, websites and streaming radio stations to use our music and Creative Commons offers a great framework to stimulate that. We don’t create art to exist in a capitalism vacuum. We’d much rather have people listening first and deciding to support it later, much in the way that shareware works.”
Sounds Are Active has been releasing one album per month since introducing their Subscription Package in July and they are showing no signs of slowing down. “Earlier this year we began experimenting with releasing EP’s and special projects for free via our website and it has really developed into a more immediate form of communication with our audience. I think we will continue to offer high quality music in a number of formats, be it mp3, vinyl, CD or cassette”, says Schlarb.
Founded in 1999, Sounds Are Active has released over 25 albums of experimental hip-hop, ambient, electronic instrumental and free jazz. The label has also been recognized in teaching, charity and workshop efforts throughout Los Angeles County parks and schools.
