The author once explained: "The HERMIT first appeared to me at a moment of great need and turmoil in my life. I say 'appeared' in the sense that while going through an intense period of spiritual seeking and reflection many decades ago, I experienced a time when the words would come into my head and would not leave me until I had written them down! Inconveniently at the time, the messages would usually occur during the very early hours of the morning and would go around and around in my head until I finally had to get up and write them down! At first I treated them with some degree of skepticism and suspicion. However, as my life unfolded and I began to instinctively draw upon them for strength and inspiration at times of need I am now convinced that they could well prove themselves valuable in the lives of others too."

Richardson observes that due to the great differences of belief, opinion, politic affiliation and life direction the world seems to be in a more sorrowful state, despite its increased material wealth and technological advancement. The author therefore wonders if a simpler philosophy and way of universal thinking would be of benefit. He hopes that the teachings of The HERMIT could be a part of this collective healing process - perhaps introducing a simpler form of wisdom, truth and understanding to the minds of those who were seeking a greater sense in relation to what was going on in their lives.
