Beach bashes bring high-energy DJ parties to Tulum

TULUM, Riviera Maya – “Cutting-edge cool” may not exactly be a term Mezzanine owner Brendon Leach feels an affinity with but it aptly describes the hot house music parties at Tulum’s newest boutique hotel.

New Zealander Leach spent time traveling and clubbing through the legendary party scene in Ibiza, Spain and wanted to create a similar liberating and chilled out ambience when last fall he and partner John Kendall (also his brother-in-law) launched the 4 minimalist hotel suites, outdoor bar-lounge, and authentic Thai restaurant that has already won acclaim and rave reviews.

“Ibiza was always a special place for me and when we embarked on creating Mezzanine, I knew I wanted to bring the same freedom and liberation under the stars with great house music to the beaches of Tulum,” says Leach.

Though he shies away from grand proclamations, the “Friday night Fiesta en la Playa” parties have drawn crowds of electronic music enthusiasts who come from as far away as Cancun and neighboring Playa del Carmen for the live DJs spinning the latest house beats from 9 p.m. until 2 a.m.

An atmosphere of casual sophistication floats amid Mezzanine’s large outdoor stone patio overlooking the Caribbean Sea and the cenote-style pool surrounded by low grass mats and seating under the stars as guest DJs from London, Ibiza and Mexico show off their talents. Performance artists on stilts juggling fire and fire dancers add an element of the exotic to the parties.

The outdoor beach bar serves up crisp martinis, cool margaritas, Brazilian caipirinas and tequila, as well as a wide variety of other tropical cocktails and wines. Mezzanine’s lounge, located above the restaurant is a stylish setting revolving around a pool table, and rich red and dark chocolate rattan lounges perfect for escaping the crowd.

Pre-party crowds dine at Mezzanine’s fabulous restaurant featuring all-day breakfast, munchy beach food such as wraps and sandwiches and authentic Thai dishes.
