Minneapolis Orthodontist Dr. Bonvino Practice Offers Back to School Advice

August 28, 2009- ST. PAUL AND MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – Cosmopolitan Orthodontics, a Minneapolis, MN orthodontics practice, reminds parents to call now to schedule one last orthodontic check-up for their children before school starts.Back to school appointments tend to book quickly as parents scramble to squeeze in one last summer appointment so their children don't have to miss school for their check-up, said Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth, who opened Cosmopolitan Orthodontics in June. Dr. Trudy Bonvino, a Minneapolis orthodontist, is the orthodontist on staff there.
This also is the time of year when parents of athletes need to purchase new mouth guards.
"Last year's mouth guard won't work for a growing child," said Eisenhuth, a Minneapolis, MN braces expert. "Just as they outgrow shoes and uniforms, children's jaws grow and mouth guards must be replaced."
It is important for a mouth guard to fit securely in the mouth to prevent injury. An orthodontist or dentist can check the fit of children's mouth guards if they have been purchased from a sporting goods store. Or, if parents prefer a custom-fitted mouth guard, Cosmopolitan Orthodontics can take impressions and have one made within a week, Eisenhuth said.
"A custom-fitted mouth guard fabricated by us will provide athletes with the protection they need," she said. "We also ensure that the fit is comfortable and the patient is able to breathe and speak easily when wearing the appliance."
When a mouth guard is made specifically for an individual patient, factors such as orthodontic appliances and erupting, loose or missing teeth can be taken into consideration, she said. If the athlete has incurred dental trauma in the past and there are areas of the mouth that need additional protection, that issue can be addressed.
A custom mouth guard is made over the course of two visits. Eisenhuth takes an impression of the mouth at the first appointment to use in creating the mouth guard. The mouth guard is properly fitted at the second appointment, which usually is a week later.
Students who participate in soccer, hockey, karate, football, lacrosse, basketball or any type of sport where there is a possibility of being hit in the mouth should wear a mouth guard, Eisenhuth said.
